General Information:

About the Data Warehouse.

The Data Warehouse is a repository of University data from campus transaction systems. Some examples of transactional systems are Student Administration System and the Financial Records System. Data is extracted from the campus transactional systems, put into the Data Warehouse, and is then retrieved and analyzed at the customer's desktop.

The Data Warehouse is built from the transactional systems. Data is identified for inclusion, checked for redundancy, and restructured if necessary (using a combination of fields to create a new field). Once the data is identified, it is put into the Data Warehouse. The data is periodically refreshed, determined by the static/nonstatic nature of the data, need, etc. Some Data Marts are refreshed nightly, others not as frequently. This data is for queries only, any changes to data must be made in the transactional system.

Getting Access to the Data Warehouse.

Data can be accessed from a desktop computer. To access the Data Warehouse, you will need permission to access the data, and a tool (software) to access the data. The University is currently using Hyperion as the reporting tool for accessing Data Warehouse data.

Who Can Access the Data Warehouse?

Any faculty and staff member at all UConn campuses, for the purpose of conducting University Business.

What Does Hyperion Provide?

Hyperion provides the executives, analysts, developers and employees with query and analysis capabilities, supported by a Web enabled interface. The customer can build queries and reports by clicking icons and manipulating objects.

Using Hyperion Report Writer allows the user with an interface to data when using a Web Browser. This enables all significant analysis and reporting functionality, without the customer needing connection to the actual database. By using Hyperion Report Viewer, users get access to view created reports. They cannot change the data model or report configuration, just look at the data that is in the existing reports.

How Does the User Benefit?

The user will find using Hyperion is beneficial for several reasons. It is the University's strategic direction to use Hyperion as the front end reporting tool for other systems (admissions, faculty advisors, etc,). Hyperion provides the user with the ability to manipulate and analyze data. It allows the user to access canned reports with an easy point and click access. Reports can be created, customized and reviewed; they can also be exported into office software, such as Excel and Word.

Who Uses Hyperion?

Office administrators, support staff, faculty administrators and report designers can use Hyperion. The Budget office and fiscal managers for Schools/Colleges/Units and departments and Library as well as departments using Peoplesoft Student Administration are currently using Hyperion to front end their data marts.

Obtain the Hyperion Software.

Hyperion Software can be obtained through The University's Software Licensing Group. Please refer to http://software.uconn.edu/software/software_detail.php?softid=brio
